Which sourdough loaf should I order? A guide to our breads
The most common question we get is simple: which bread should I order? Every loaf on our menu is made with natural sourdough fermentation, but they behave very differently on the table. Here is how we would choose, depending on what you plan to eat.
For everyday sandwiches and school lunches, start with the Soft Sourdough Sandwich Loaf. It is light and fluffy, made with local honey and olive oil, and slices evenly. If you like a little heat, the Garlic-Jalapeño is the same soft sandwich-style loaf with roasted garlic and jalapeño — and yes, it is spicy.
For the purest sourdough flavor, order the Classic White Loaf. It is only flour, water and salt, risen slowly with our starter and no commercial yeast. It has the crisp crust and open, chewy crumb most people picture when they think of sourdough. The White and Wheat loaf follows the same simple recipe with part whole wheat flour, for a slightly nuttier, heartier slice.
For soup night, roasted vegetables or a cheese board, try the Herbal Rustic Sourdough (our classic loaf with fresh rosemary and thyme) or the French Onion + Garlic, which has caramelized onion, roasted garlic and a hint of thyme baked right in. Both are good enough to eat on their own with a little butter.
For breakfast and toast, the Hearty Sourdough Loaf is the most filling: white and whole wheat flour with pumpkin, sunflower, chia and flax seeds, rolled oats and a touch of honey. It toasts beautifully and keeps you going until lunch. Our sourdough English muffins are the other breakfast favorite, and they freeze very well.
Hosting or making sandwiches for a group? The Herbal Sourdough Ciabatta comes in a pack of eight, brushed with garlic and basil olive oil — easy to split and fill.
Some loaves let you choose a round or sandwich shape at checkout. Round loaves are best for tearing and sharing; sandwich shape gives even slices for the toaster. Sourdough needs at least two days' notice, so order for the day you plan to pick up in Puriscal. Still not sure?
